Willem Thierry Arnold van Brienen was the son of Arnoud Willem van Brienen (1783-1854) and grandson of Willem Joseph van Brienen (1760-1839). Just as his father he was a politician and held the position of chamberlain of King Willem III (1817-1890) and as his personal advisor.

He is mentioned in the provenance of the painting La liseuse by Dominicus van Tol (Schloss German no. 218/ French no. 259).
