After 1945, Wido Schliep became a source of information for Edgar Breitenbach on the illicit trade in looted art objects in the Munich area and elsewhere in Germany, particularly in the Hamburg region. There, he got wind in 1948 of the presence of a group of Schloss paintings being transacted by local art dealers, especially Schloss 275 and 276, both paintings by Francesco Guardi.
