Variant 3 - According to Fernand Musso, the Germans reached Chambon on 10 April 1943 with their “French rat” [That would be Jean-François Lefranc whom the author never names]. After they placed seals on the doors to the vault which held the Schloss crates since 1939, the director of the depot [vault] escaped, contacted the bank director, who notified Fernand Musso. The latter had already received a search warrant signed by Darquier de Pellepoix to enter the bank vault. Musso then alerted Pierre Laval in Vichy of the danger posed by the Germans’ gaining control of the Schloss collection.
