Václav Brožík

Václav Brožík, or Vaclav de Brozik, born in Třemošná in 1851, was a Czech painter. After attending the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, he studied Old Masters in the Netherlands and eventually settled in Paris. In 1879 he married Hermina Sedelmeyer, daughter of the wealthy Parisian art dealer Charles Sedelmeyer. In 1893, he became a Professor at the Art Academy in Prague. He was named a member of the Institut de France and Emperor Franz Joseph I, elevated Brožík to nobility. He also became a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts, received the Grand Cross of the Légion d’Honneur and was appointed to the Czech Academy of Arts and Sciences. Brožík died of heart failure in 1901 and was buried in Montmartre. He was the previous owner of the painting Des paysants se disputent dans un cabaret by Adriaen Brouwer.
