Repurposing of Rivesaltes camp as a center for foreign-born Jews

On 14 January 1941 the camp of Rivesaltes, once a French army base near Perpignan in the Pyrénées-Orientales, repurposed its facilities to accommodate thousands of foreign-born “stateless” Jews rounded up all across the unoccupied zone of France. Eventually, Rivesaltes became an important staging area from which thousands of Jews were transported to Paris from where they were later deported to concentration and extermination camps in Eastern Europe.
