Edgar Breitenbach recovered Schloss 56 from an artist’s studio in Munich. Breitenbach considered this painting by van Dyck (“Portrait of Paul Pontius”) one of the more significant in the Schloss collection. Lt. Ray W. Hugoboom had originally received the painting as “turned-in loot from the Führerbau.” Instead of returning it, he had it restored by a Mr. Söker from Neu-Gilching. Thereafter, it hung in Lt. Hugoboom’s office for a while. At some point, the painting ended up in an unidentified artist’s studio in Munich from which Breitenbach recovered it following von Dallwitz’s tip. Hugoboom was severely reprimanded for the way that he treated the Schloss painting after his return to the United States.
