Jacques Jaujard informed Louis Hautecoeur of the latest thinking regarding the fate of the confiscated Schloss collection. He recommended to Abel Bonnard that he follow the procedure which was applied to the Maurice and Robert Rothschild Collection seized by the French State. The “Direction générale des Domaines” had carried out the seizure and the “Direction des Musées Nationaux” (Directorate of National Museums) was designated as the sequestrating custodian of these collections and authorized to exercise the right of pre-emption over them. In agreement with the Domaines, the Schloss Collection would be entrusted to the “Direction des Musées Nationaux” which would create an inventory with the “Domaines”, to subsequently exercise the right of pre-emption, to the extent that will be deemed useful. He suggested that the Schloss collection should be stored in an already existing warehouse of the National Museums or in a new one that would be set up especially for this purpose. The “Direction des Musées Nationaux” was under no obligation to negotiate the fate of the Schloss Collection with a German authority.
