The Préfet de la Haute Vienne in Limoges replied to Darquier de Pellepoix’s blast of 6 May 1943. He confirmed that Lefranc met with his deputy for the purpose of appointing a bailiff in order to draw up an inventory, as well as a judicial police commissaire to proceed with the removal of the seals from the doors to the vault holding the crates. According to the Préfet, the commissaire from the Judicial Police took charge and wanted to be the one to draw up the inventory, which Lefranc complained to him about. He agreed that Lefranc was the best qualified to conduct this exercise but that it was necessary for the commissaire to be present. The Préfet argued that this measure was designed to ensure that nothing would leave those crates without Darquier de Pellepoix’s approval. Lefranc agreed to the Préfet’s decisions.
