Darquier de Pellepoix confirmed to Pierre Laval that “the police” had investigated the Schloss collection. He also shared his concerns over the Schloss collection, indicating that he wanted special care given to the paintings during their removal because one of them “was worth 50 million francs.” His reasons for delaying the transfer of collection rested solely on receiving the asset from the German authorities in Paris, a sentiment which he shared in writing with Bruno Lohse. The latter gave his formal approval for the transfer and pledged to give sole custody of the collection to the CGQJ. After that pledge was broken, Darquier de Pellepoix notified the Préfet regional in Limoges on 18 April 1943 to return the collection to Chambon.
