Meeting between Huyghe, Bazin, Darquier de Pellepoix and Lefranc
At Jaujard’s urging, Mr. Huyghe and Mr. Bazin met with Mr. Darquier de Pellepoix and Mr. Lefranc to continue earlier discussions about the Louvre’s exercise of its right of preemption on the recently confiscated Schloss collection. Mr Darquier de Pellepoix was embarrassed by the fact that the occupying authorities would make precise demands . It was explained to Darquier de Pellepoix that it did not seem possible for the Louvre to enter into negotiations with the German authorities and that the Louvre only wanted to make use of their pre-emption right. Mr. Pellepoix said he would speak to Mr. Laval on this issue. As for the BONN collection that was seized at the same time, the Louvre should be able to exercise its right of pre-emption; the owner having been deprived of French nationality, the collection becomes by current law the property of the French State and must be sold for the benefit of national relief.
