Jean-Baptiste Guillaume de Gevigney was a clergyman, theologian, librarian, collector of Italian, French, Dutch and Flemish paintings and an art dealer. In Paris he worked as a genealogist in the service of the Count of Provence (1773-1777), and then as keeper of titles and genealogies in the King’s Library (1779-1784). He held two major auctions, with the first one in 1769, at which he sold 248 paintings, among them 119 Dutch and Flemish paintings. The second auction took place in 1779, where 398 of the 747 paintings auctioned off belonged to the Flemish school.  In the 1779 auction, Guillaume de Gevigney sold a painting attributed to Gerard Ter Borch entitled L’intéressant message (German Schloss Nr. 215, French Schloss Nr. 256) which later was part of Adolphe Schloss’ collection.
