Issued from a family of Amsterdam beer brewers, Jan Messchert von Vollenhoven was a Conservative administrator and member of parliament that later went on to be the mayor of Amsterdam (1858-1866). He is mentioned in the provenance of three paintings; Combat de cavalerie by Adriaen van de Velde (Schloss German no. 222/ French no. 266), Hiver, marine avec barques et personnages dans un paysage hivernal by Willem van de Velde (Schloss German no. 223/ French no. 267), and Chasse au faucon by Jan Wynants (Schloss German no. 248/ French no. 292).
