Comte Henri Greffulhe a naturalised Frenchmen from a family of Belgian bankers, served as a deputy of Seine-et-Marne (1889-1893). He was married to a heiress of a European princely family. Élisabeth de Caraman-Chimay (1860-1952). Marcel Proust was acquainted with the couple and created the characters of duke and duchess de Guermantes inspired by them for his novel À la recherche du temps perdu. Comte Henri Greffulhe is mentioned in the provenance of the painting Intérieur de corps de garde by Jacob Duck (Schloss German no. L15/ French no. 73).
