France and Great Britain declared war on Germany on 3 September 1939 in response to its invasion of Poland. It marked the beginning of the so-called “drôle de guerre” (phoney war) which ended on 10 May 1940 with Germany’s blitzkrieg attack against the Netherlands, Belgium and France.
