The Munich based Bayrische Staatsgemäldesammlungen (Bavarian State Painting Collections), founded in1799, hold the collections of artworks held by the Free State of Bavaria. Ernst Buchner (1892-1962) was the director of the Bayrische Staatsgemäldesammlungen during the Nazi regime. He played a significant role in the seizure of Jewish art and the eventual safeguarding of German collections and Nazi loot.
