On 18 April 1942, Pierre Laval was appointed Prime Minister of the Vichy government. He oversaw the most violent and cruel aspects of Vichy’s anti-Jewish policies in total collaboration with German authorities and Nazi security services. Under his watch, more than 76000 Jewish men, women and children were deported to Nazi extermination centers in Eastern Europe.
