The name A. Walter de Rearwood appears in the provenance of two paintings as recorded in the Banque Dreyfus Inventory: tableau no. 296, Canaletto’s Vue de Venise (referenced with the title “Venice: Piazzetta dei Leoncini” as by Michele Marieschi in the Frick Art Reference Library) and tableau no. 250 Le joyeux buveur by David Teniers the Younger.   Both paintings were sold to the Sonderauftrag Linz and transferred to the Führerbau in November 1943. Canaletto’s Vue de Venise appears again in the Schloss Sale on 5 December 1951 as lot 37 at the Galerie Charpentier in Paris.     Initial research suggests that A. de Rearwood could be a misspelling and, in fact, point to John Walter (1738 - 1812), the founder of the Times or his son, John Walter (1776 – 1847), the newspaper’s second editor. The Walters owned the country house, Bearwood House, in Hurst, Berkshire, England. The mansion has a picture gallery, where John Walter II housed the extensive collection of Flemish works he inherited from his father.     Links:   [about:blank https://arcade.nyarc.org/search~S6/?searchtype=X&searcharg=A.+Walter+Rearwood&searchscope=6&sortdropdown=-&SORT=DZ&extended=0&SUBMIT=Search&searchlimits=&searchorigarg=XA.+Walter+Rearwood%26SORT%3DDZ]   [about:blank http://berkshirehistory.com/castles/bearwood_house.html]   [about:blank https://doi.org/10.1093/ref:odnb/28637]   [about:blank https://www.thetimes.co.uk/static/about-us/]
