John Sowerby, Esq. bought the Putteridge Bury manor in Bedfordshire, England, in 1788. Sowerby was involved in the jewellery and diamond trade on Hatton Garden in London. The country house was destroyed after a fire in 1808 but was later rebuilt in 1812. The Estates of Lilley, Putteridge and Horwellbury passed to George Sowerby (d. 1888).
