“The German authorities who had indicated to me their desire to buy certain paintings from this collection bowed to the Louvre and insisted on examining them only after the choice made by the Louvre. Dr. Göpel and Dr. Lohse asked me to reserve the paintings remaining after the choice of the Louvre, excluding the 21 paintings considered of dubious attribution by Mr. Huyghe, Bazin and Postma, and subsequently by themselves. The National Museums have been able to enrich their collection from the Dutch period with 49 top quality paintings, including one of the rare landscapes known to Rembrandt. I should also be congratulated if most of the paintings in this collection go to the Museums of a country with an old culture, our neighbour.”
