Jan Bleuland was born in Gouda (Holland) on 20 July 1756. Throughout his professional life, he worked as a physician, a professor and a rector (Rector Magnificus) of the Universities of Harderwijk and Utrecht. He published scientific works in the medical and anatomic fields. He collected naturalia, Dutch Old Masters and contemporary paintings.

He is mentioned in the provenance of the painting La dormeuse by Gabriel Metsu (Schloss German no. 132/ French no. 156.
