Claude Tolozan was born in Lyon. His father, Antoine Tolozan (1687-1754) was a silk merchant and banker. Claude collected Dutch and Flemish 17th century paintings, Italian and French pictures. A large part of his collection was auctioned in 1801.

He is mentioned in the provenance of the painting Portrait of a woman (Maria de Grebber) by Gabriel Metsu. Adolphe Schloss owned this painting and was sold before his death in 1910.
