Achille Fontaine-Flament was a young commercial judge in Lille when he married Augustine Flament (1844-1891) in 1862 and with the help of her father created his cotton factory. Fontaine-Flament formed an art collection of Old Masters paintings that he was forced to sell after making some bad investments in his factory. The collection was auctioned off at Galerie Georges Petit on 10 June 1904.
