American oil billionaire and art collector reputed to be the richest man in the world at the time of his death. He owned a controlling interest in the Getty Oil Company and in approximately 200 other ventures. After the World War II, he settled at Sutton Place, Surrey, England. In 1953 he founded the J. Paul Getty Museum, Malibu, Los Angeles, USA where his collection was displayed during his lifetime. Upon his death in 1976 he bequeathed the bulk of his wealth to the trustees of the museum. The Getty Trust became a philanthropic foundation and built the Getty Center that opened in 1997.
