Franz Kälberer was a German chemigrapher, who lived at 7 Appianstr. Munich. He was a patient at a hospital in Bad Tölz where he met two French POWs, including Jean Gautron. In late May 1945, the French POWs’s friends visited them at the hospital, met Kälberer and asked if he would safeguard some paintings for them. In June 1945, they were repatriated and left the paintings with him. A man by the name of Otto Kisov offered to sell them in September 1946. One of those paintings was Schloss 144.
