David Penderleath Sellar

David Plenderleath Sellar, born in Scotland to Patrick Sellar and Anne Craig, was a banker, merchant and collector of Old Masters. He also served as chairman of the London Tramways Company, which operated London trams and trolleybuses from 1894 to 1933, and director of the London Assurance for Fire, Life and Marine Assurances.   David P. Sellar’s name appears in connection with several paintings that were part of the Adolphe Schloss Collection: _Pâturage hollandais, _attributed to Adriaen van de Velde; two Francesco Guardi works: _Venise, la Place Saint-Marc _and Venise, le Pont du Rialto; Rembrandt’s  Study of an Angel and  Pieta by Petrus Christus.     All works remained in Sellar’s private collection until their sale at the Galerie Georges Petit in Paris on 6 June 1889. Adolphe Schloss acquired Rembrandt’s _Study of an Angel _for 5,000 francs. The Pieta was sold by Rogier van der Weyden for 2,500 francs. The two Guardis, sold together as lots 34 and 35, ended up with Jean-François Lefranc in late 1943 after the confiscation of the Schloss Collection.
