Philip of Burgundy

Philip was an illegitimate son of Duke Philip the Good. He was Admiral of the Netherlands (1502-1517) and served as Bishop of Utrecht (1517-1524). Philip was known as a patron of the arts who commissioned works from the painter Jan Gossaert and the humanist Gelderhouwer.

He is mentioned in the provenance of the painting Vénus tenant Cupidon par la main by Jan Gossaert (Schloss German no. L18/ French no. 86). There is a likely mention of the painting in the 1524 estate inventory of Castle Duurstede at Wijk bij Duurstede, in a house at one of the city gates of Wijk bij Duurstede (used as a ‘pied á terre’ by Philip of Burgundy, to entertain female company).
