Jérôme de Vries was a literary historian, art dealer and auctioneer. He lived in Amsterdam where he worked as a municipal clerk. Among his literary contributions are the Dutch translation of the treatise of Grotius (1844) and his 1808 publication of the history of Dutch poetry. Vries worked as Joost van den Vondel's (1587-1679) editor, considered to be one of the greatest Dutch poets. Together wit
