A descendant of the Galitzin noble house of Tsarist Russia, Prince Dmitri Alekseyevich Galitzin served as the Russian ambassador in Paris (1765-1768) and in The Hague (1769-1797). Well-educated, he was an art connoisseur and a friend of Denis Diderot and Étienne Maurice Falconet, and advised Catherine the Great (Catherine II 1762-1796) on purchases of artworks in Europe.
