Samuel Appleton Brown Abbott was the first director of the American Academy in Rome (1897-1903). Originally from Massachusetts he was first married to Anna Abby Francis Woods (1849-1895), the only daughter of Marshall and Anne Brown Francis Woods. He is mentioned in the provenance of the painting _Vénus tenant Cupidon par la main_ by Jan Gossaert (Schloss German no. L18/ French no. 86).
