Willem Joseph baron van Brienen van de Groote Lindt was a merchant, banker and politician. He was active in hemp and tar trade as his father and grandfather, they owned the trading company in Amsterdam ‘Willem van Brienen en zoon’. Van Brienen collected Dutch Old Masters. He is mentioned in the provenance of the painting _La liseuse_ by Dominicus van Tol (Schloss German no. 218/ French no. 259).
