In 1869, Rudolph Lepke, a German art dealer, founded the Rudolph Lepke's Kunst-Auctions-Haus, the first art auction house in Berlin. In 1887, Wilhelm von Bode auctioned off 1062 paintings from the depot of the National Gallery auctioned at the Lepke auction house. Lepke retired in 1900.
