Thomas Humphry Ward was born in Kingston-Upon-Hull. He studied at Merchant Taylors’ School, a selective school for boys in Hertfordshire. The school awarded him a scholarship to Brasenose College in Oxford, where he was elected a fellow in 1869. Ward became a tutor at Brasenose from 1879 to 1889.   In 1872 he married a British novelist, Mary Augusta Ward (née Arnold, 1851– 1920). Together they had
