Samuel Appleton Brown Abbott was the first director of the American Academy in Rome (1897-1903). Originally from Massachusetts he was first married to Anna “Abby” Francis Woods (1849-1895), the only daughter of Marshall and Anne Brown Francis Woods.
He is mentioned in the provenance of the painting Vénus tenant Cupidon par la main by Jan Gossaert (Schloss German no. L18/ French no. 86).
