Conrad Jacob Gerbrand Copes van Hasselt was born in Haarlem. He was a member of the Council of State during the reign of Willem I and Willem II and a judge at the Imperial Court of Justice. He was the previous owner of the painting _Portrait du Sieur Speyrat [Speyart] de Woerden_ by Salomon de Bray (Schloss German no. 24/ French no. 30).
