France signed an armistice with Germany, thus putting an end to military hostilities. Germany controlled northern France and all of France’s Atlantic coastline down to the Spanish border. A military command [“''Militärbefehlshaber in Frankreich''” (MBF)] for France was instituted to oversee the Occupation of France. The Armistice coincided with the establishment of a collaborationist government in Vichy headed by Marshal Philippe Pétain.
