Cornelis Hofstede de Groot was a Dutch art historian, art collector and museum curator. He is known for updating John Smith’s catalogue raisonné, in German (10 volumes), translated by Edward G. Hawke (8 volumes).

Hofstede de Groot is mentioned in the provenance of the painting View on a lake with rising thunderstorms by Jan van Goyen. He owned the painting since 1902 and bequeathed it to the Groninger Museum. Adolphe Schloss owned the painting between 1894-1902.
