New page

Charles V was Holy Roman Emperor, Archduke of Austria, King of Spain (Castile and Aragon), and Lord of the Netherlands as titular Duke of Burgundy.

He is mentioned in the provenance of the painting ''Vénus tenant Cupidon par la main'' by Jan Gossaert (Schloss German no. L18/ French no. 86). He may have owned it after Bishop Henry of the Palatinate transferred his secular privileges as a bishop to Emperor Charles V in 1528. This included Castle Duurstede, the episcopal residence at Wijk bij Duurstede, and all its assets. The principality became part of the Habsburg dominions. There is a likely mention of the painting in the 1529 (revisited) estate inventory of Castle Duurstede – in a house at one of the city gates of Wijk bij Duurstede (used as a ‘pied-à-terre’ by Philip of Burgundy). The painting was not present in the estate inventory of Castle Duurstede of 1533.
